Great Kei Rugby turns rural passion into a working rugby ecosystem — developing players, training coaches, and building real pathways for youth across the Eastern Cape.
Our 2026 U19 tournament at Byletts High School was our most successful to date — covered by SuperSport Schools, with on-site career counselling for participants and visitors. 2027 doubles down: a two-day festival adding U16 boys and girls, and a new distribution strategy built around social-media reels and micro-influencers with real reach into rural communities.

Great Kei Rugby is an initiative for youth from rural areas to transform a love of rugby into a working ecosystem — one that develops players, trains coaches, and creates genuine pathways. Just as importantly, it brings sport back into rural schools, where it has all but disappeared. We deliver this through an annual tournament and a regional league, focused on all six high schools in the Great Kei. The region's 16 adult clubs — three of them in the top two provincial leagues — show just how deeply rugby already runs here.
Where the tournament creates the spark, our regional league builds the ecosystem. Six U16 boys teams play a home-and-away round robin, ten Wednesday match days plus a finals day, April to August. We put transport, mouthguards, post protectors and match balls on the field, and support grass-cutting and field upkeep. Off the field, we train coaches through BokSmart and World Rugby Level 1, and every school provides a referee and a first-aider to train. Clubs and schools work as one — schools hold the time and duty of care, clubs bring the coaching passion.

2026 Results
Our 2026 U19 tournament — covered by SuperSport Schools — wrapped with four finals across the boys' and girls' draws.
Bhongolethu/Jongilanga (3rd) later won the wild-card play-off against Umzuvukile/Kwenxura and took the 3rd/4th play-off spot in place of a Pool D runner-up.
Mzamowethu withdrew from both fixtures. Umzuvukile/Kwenxura's runner-up spot went to a wild-card play-off, won by Bhongolethu/Jongilanga (Pool C).
